Pratchett On Politics, Youth, And The Value Of Young Idiocy

For context, Sam Vimes is musing inwardly about his younger self, whom he suddenly needs to mentor in lieu of his (own) original one due to a fantasy world-based magical freak accident in space and time (Night Watch, p. 163):

“He wondered if it was at all possible to give this idiot some lessons in basic politics. That was always the dream, wasn’t it? ‘I wish I knew then what I know now’? But when you got older, you found out that you now wasn’t you then. You then was a twerp. You then was what you had to be to start out on the rocky road of becoming you now, and one of the rocky patches on that road was being a twerp.

A much better dream, one that’d ensure sounder sleep, was not to know now what you didn’t know then.”

When I Was Little, My Dad Taught Me This

Not sure the rhyme scheme lets it qualify, technically, as a limerick:

In days of old when knights were bold and toilets weren’t invented

They’d lay their load right in the road and walk away contented.

Why I’ve Given What Bits Of Time And Money I Could To This’n*

young bernie

and not because he’s pretty fine in this photo

Because I want to make sure every single person possible has a good chance to learn about this candidate but also this kind of candidate, promoting certain socio-political priorities.

And because I want everyone possible to see that a candidate with these kinds of priorities is, as it turns out, in darned good company.

Possible, perhaps fatally optimistic tagline: We CAN Have Nice Things!

*Even though I’ve well passed the point of feeling embarrassed for all my “rah rah rahs” on social media.

Abbie Hoffman’s Pretty Cool Political Stance

Via NYT:

”You are talking to a leftist. I believe in the redistribution of wealth and power in the world. I believe in universal hospital care for everyone. I believe that we should not have a single homeless person in the richest country in the world. And I believe that we should not have a C.I.A. that goes around overwhelming governments and assassinating political leaders, working for tight oligarchies around the world to protect the tight oligarchy here at home.”

It Occurs To Me: On War, Credit, Trump

I think that countries should not, as a general rule, be allowed to dispatch their militaries unless they’ve demonstrated they’ll care for its veterans well.

The very busy United States has not, as far as I am aware, done so to date.

If its record in this area were transposed into a credit bureau-type report, I doubt the U.S. would be approved for any but the measliest of secured credit card (with high yearly fees), let alone the diamond-edged one of war.

But I guess it’s rich and unbridled enough in a general sense that it can, generally, make any risky investments it wants, regardless of repeated failures.

Kind of like Donald Trump, I guess.
